Snowmobiling in Maine - The Maine Winter Sports Series

In winter, when the snow starts piling up, get ready for the sound of engines roaring. That’s when Maine becomes a playground for the tens of thousands of snowmobile enthusiasts, who take advantage of the state’s more than 13,000 miles of linked snowmobile trails. Even if you don’t have a snowmobile and don’t want to shell out the money to buy one, you can have your own adventure whizzing around on a rental snowmobile through this beautiful state. Here are some places where you can rent a snowmobile for a day or two for your own winter fantasy adventure.

At Northern Outdoors, an outdoor sports facility in The Forks area in mid-Maine, north of Skowhegan, you can either take a guided tour of the Northern woods by snowmobile, or give it a go on your own with a rental Ski-Doo or luxury Polaris snowmobile. You can also rent a riding suit, gloves, and other equipment, if you haven’t brought your own along. From the trails here, you can venture through the expanses of the Appalachian Mountain Range, to the peaks of Colburn Mountain or head over towards the frozen Moosehead Lake in Greenville. The Forks gets more than 10 feet of snow each winter, so it’s a perfect place to explore the great outdoors during the coldest months of the year. If you’d like to spend the night, Northern Outdoors also has a wide selection of log cabins, campsites, and a deluxe condominium.

If you’re in Maine all winter or all year long, you’ll probably want to buy your own snowmobile, rather than rent. Once you’ve got your own, you can join one of the hundreds of local snowmobile clubs throughout the state of Maine, where members take responsibility for clearing the trails for use and participate in fun club activities, such as potluck dinners and poker tournaments.

Even during the off-season months, you’ll still find snowmobile-related activities to keep you busy. You won’t want to miss the huge Maine Snowmobile Show on October 5th, 6th, and 7th, at the Augusta Civic Center. There, you’ll see the latest and greatest inventions in snowmobiles, accessories, guide services, trail maps, destinations, and much more. If you’re looking to get set up for some heavy snowmobiling action as soon as the first flakes come down, this is the place to stock up on all your gear.
